Right-Wing Sleaze 101

How do you transform your nation's watchdog on racism and discrimination into a critic of school desegregation and affirmative action? Easy - if you know the tricks of Right-Wing Sleaze.

This very problem faced George w. Bush. Shrub, you see, doesn't much like the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, at least not the way it's worked for the last half-century to protect American civil rights. He wanted to turn it on its head, make it into a commission against civil rights. To do that, however, he'd have to stack the commission with a majority of like-minded Repugs. Big problem. The law says no more than half of the 8-commission members could be from any one party. What's a sleazeball to do?

Let's not forget who we're dealing with here. This is the guy who has caused hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths on the strength of nothing more than a bagful of lies and a bucketful of fear.

So, if George couldn't pack the Civil Rights Commission with more than four Republicans, why not just have a couple of his henchmen declare themselves "independents"? He did, it worked, and now Georgie has rigged the commission with six of his water carriers. Suddenly - school desegregation and affirmative action are offensive. Neat trick, eh?
